Calanchi

Think that Basilicata is like calanchi: rinsed and it seems there is nothing to search for. At the begginning I use to hate it. The hills look like the desert, landscape on the moon. Sometimes there in nothing but white clay with neither trees or grass growing upon it. I took time, but now I like the clay hills eroded by rain and wind.

Since 2004 environmentalist organizations World Wildlife Fund Basilicata and Organizzazione Lucana Ambientalista has been lobbying for a Calanchi Regional Park. It would attract tourism; companies would be prevented from drilling or dumping in the calanchi. The chances however appear slim.

Oil companies already have research permits in the area and are drilling nearby. Anyway it’s not sure that merely establishing a Calanchi Reserve could protect the hills. Val DʼAgri National Park was established in 1998. Still there’s oil drilling inside the park and pipelines crossing through it.
