Notes of a fallen atheist/Notatki upadłego ateisty

I got chatting with my husband’s friend P. He would consider himself an atheist. I told him about a post from Chris Arnade Photography: “Over two years ago I entered Hunts Point as an atheist. I met and became friends with addicts who lived in filth and exchanged sex for drugs”.

“If anyone seemed the perfect candidate for atheism it was these addicts. None of them are. Rather they are some of the strongest believers I have met. I heard how Neecy found the strength to try and find a better life in her Bible. I heard how Michael’s Rosary ‘was a reminder that there is something better than all of this.”

“Soon I saw my atheism for what it is: An intellectual luxury for those who have done well.” – Wrote Arnade. “Fallen” addicts do need to believe and want to be saved. Those who “have done well" don't need to pray anymore.

Usłyszałem, jak Neecy znalazła siłę, by spróbować i odnalazła lepsze życie w Biblii.

– pisze Arnade.

Stronger one/Silniejsza

Since very young age, I. was a trouble. She couldn't resist men and alcohol - her whole life she would put her hair down. She shattered her mother's heart, her husband divorced her, and the kids were brought up by someone else. Recently she got ill. Everyone thought that her body, wrecked by years of drinking wouldn't cope, but she's doing well.

She was back to her tiny little hut and "bad life". I saw her last month: she looked well. We chatted a bit - I. revealed a story which happened recently in the village. I listened to her, looked at tiny, simple hut - I.'s home and I thought: "How strong you are!" I.'s story made me think about one of the women photographed by Chris Arnode.

On his Facebook page he posted also her poem:
“Don’t worry if I seem tired and weak,
It’s just my soles are worn from hustling in these streets.
Don’t worry about me,
Because I am a survivor,
I’ll always eat.”

Think it takes a lot of strength to live "bad life."

Wróciła do malutkiej chatki i "niedobrego życia."

Sympathy for Michael/Sympatia dla Michaela

I fallow Chris Arnade Photography on Facebook. "Michael 35, has been living on the streets has a hustler for 20 years. His parents blamed him for being sexually abused when he was a child and he left home when he was 15". Chris Arnade is close to Michael - the photos are documenting his afford to help him.

The photographer would visit him often and generally look after him. Some time ago Michael agreed to go into rehab. It seemed that he was really keen to quit his habit, but his rehab was pointless - Michael was back to heroin and prostitution. But not only would he shoot heroin into his body. There is a woman called Brenda at Huts Point.

"She has always been the voice of reason amid the chaos. She holds things together enough to cook meals and wash clothes. (…)Two weeks ago she was convinced to shoot heroin. (...) She still can’t jam a needle into herself. Michael does that." Chris Arnade wants to help the drug users documenting their life. Certainly it takes a lot of faith to stay by them.

Fotograf odwiedza go i troszczy się o niego.

(...) Dwa tygodnie temu została przekonana do wstrzykiwania heroiny.(...) Nie umie wbić sobie igły. Robi to Michael." Chris Arnade pragnie pomagać narkomanom: trzeba dużo wiary, by przy nich trwać.

Chris Arnade Photography

One of the very interesting things that I discovered on Mail Online is Chris Arnode Photography. "Mr Arnade was a Wall Street banker with a passion for photography when he wandered into Huts Point four years ago. It's one of the most impoverished neighbourhoods in the city (of New York).

He began shooting photographs of the characters and found that he could not tear himself from Huts Point. His pictures are posted on Flickr and Facebook. He also writes extensively about the problems he has found and the people he had met on his Tumblr." The stories and the photos are shocking.

"Camille, 27, had only been in Hunts Point one month when this picture was taken. She starting using heroin when she was 23 after he boyfriend introduced her to it.” Camille says that Hunts Point it's 'hell'. "All of them want to get out ore are trying to get out and find better life, away from drugs, violence and sex. But most cannot."

To jedna z najbardziej problemowych dzielnic miasta (Nowy Jork)”.

Zaczęła zażywać heroinę w wieku 23 l. kiedy to jej chłopak zapoznał ją z narkotykiem.”
