Outsider

Don’t be afraid of being different, be afraid of being like everybody else” – Somebody wrote. Easy to say, but the truth is that being unique is one of the most challenging things, because it may cause going against societal expectations. Standing out is bringing attention to yourself… An “outsider” could be not understand and accepted. Many would look down on you because you’re different. Scary, isn’t it? Most of us just want to be just like everyone else. We are deeply concerned about what people think about us, and afraid of being singled out. It takes a real individuality to go on your own way, without worrying too much what the majority thinks. Those people are strong and independent… I’m not, unfortunately! Being “not like them” is damn hard. In today’s world everybody is trying to copy the others!

I never wanted to be different, and spent most of my life trying to fit in. Society values sameness, so I was doing my best in hope of assimilation with the people around me. It seemed to me that my attempts to fit it were going to work. I was happy about it, but deep down I felt very different. It was making me feel quite lonely. On the one hand I wanted to be like everybody else, but on the other side it seemed to me that I think much deeper than the rest of the world. It looked like “the others” are interested basically in eating and daily things. For years I was having conversations about pasta for dinner, and thinking that I was faking all the time. For most of my life I felt as an outsider, but I was deeply convicted that you have to pretend, otherwise you will be rejected and excluded. I was positive that the people won’t accept you the way you are… My mental disorder has taught me that they actually are much better that I believed. I expect that everybody would find me much changed, but suddenly I stopped caring about what anyone thinks.

Shortly after returning from Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa I went to my home village in Poland. I told everybody that I’m not going back to Italy because I want to find God. Strange enough, isn’t it? I was positive that my family would reject me for good, but much to my surprise they never did. My husband, my brother, the neighbours – everybody was very supportive. Surely they didn’t like my abnormal behaviour, but they weren’t rejecting me. With no doubt my family felt quite embarrassed about the whole thing, they didn’t know how to deal with the situation… My persistence to stay in Poland put them in a difficult position, and still they showed incredible patience and understanding. I’m writing about everything because I know that talking about mental health problems makes people feel uncomfortable. We’re afraid of being judged, and maybe excluded from our friend’s circle. The stigma associated with mental illness is stopping from talking about the experience. The whole story taught me that I was wrong while thinking that if people would see you as different, you would be lonely and ostracized. So far everyone’s treating me well.

Czyniło mnie to dość samotną.

Xerox

Yesterday I was observing two employers in the Xerox copy store. Their job was monotonous, constant… Just the sort of work that can become boring very quickly. Still, even if their day-to-day activity was not interesting, it was clear that they appreciate it. What’s the secret? Clearly you have to focus on the positive. There are many benefits from every boring job, like the paycheck for example… You’ve got to notice the good sides of where you are right now. Life is quite simple – for the most of us it’s about repeating all the same things each day. If you are a housewife you get your children ready for school, then you do daily house tidy routine, make lunch and dinner and so on. If you have a job you get up, go to work, come home, eat, relax…

Somebody would say that repetition is good once you get used to it. I just want to say that I really admire the people who are happy with their simple life, appreciate their work, even if it’s boring, and are meeting their obligations very well. Unfortunately I’m not one of them! To be honest since I stopped working over 10 years ago I didn’t like very much to be a stay-at-home mother. First, I would allow myself to fall into a routine, and then I felt burned out by the life of of repetition. My mental health problems started back in 2011 with negative thoughts. Everybody has it once a while, the problem is that myself, slowly, I started to see negative in everything. Even though I have a family of my own I would define my life as empty and meaningless. I was thinking think: “Is it this all? There has to be something else!”

I was going trough a bad time, and everything was coming to a crisis until the day came when I realised that nothing makes any sense, except seeking God. I was positive that leaving my husband and children is very reasonable, just like living under the stars in Castelmezzano e Pietrapertosa… Mental illness is considered to shameful because we don’t understand what causes it, and what is incomprehensible causes fear. People with those problems are sometimes behaving in a strange way… I’m revealing my story to demonstrate that deep down in our mind can exist the reason of everything. Like the proverb says: “A wise man can learn something even from a fool.” I’ve learned a lot from my mental illness.

Iceberg

In our times people are talking about everything, but mental illness rather unacceptable. People who are experiencing it feel quite embarrassed to admit the fact. There are various reasons, one of them is a fear… Of yourself. We are afraid of things that we cannot control. Emotions are the hardest thing to control, and mental disorders are affecting your mood, thinking and behaviour. Anything can happen, sometimes you don’t understand your own actions… It’s scary, and talking about it makes you feel anxious. People with that sort of problems often would prefer to sweep things under the carpet, metaphorically speaking. If you’re scared to talk about yourself, you’re sending the signal about something that cannot be admitted. There is nothing strange that the stigma of mental illness hasn’t gone away yet!

Denying the existence of the problem might hide the truth from the others, but everything has a price. Trying to conceal the whole things is sort of admitting to yourself that you cannot be accepted the way you are. I want to be honest about mental disorder. I would like to believe that even the strange behaviour, that seems to be pointless and impossible to understand might keep the truth hidden. Let’s take as an example my real-life story. Leaving my family behind in order to seek God is quite bizarre, clearly. In fact the illness has only brought to light the big disappointment: my entire life wasn’t working out the way I hoped.

I had never accepted that I wasn’t working, but instead of trying to change something I was trying to put all the blame on my husband’s shoulders. I felt frustrated, helpless and stuck in sad existence. I didn’t appreciate my family the way I should have. I lost myself into motherhood quitting my job and dedicating myself exclusively to raising my children. Sometimes it felt like a burden… “The mind is like an iceberg; it floats with one-seventh of its bulk above the water” – Sigmunt Freud wrote. I think that in the past 10 years I was just subconsciously looking for a chance to just close the door behind me and disappear… Which I eventually did.

To budzi lęk, mówienie o wszystkim powoduje niepokój.

It really is extremely difficult to talk about your own mental disorder. There’s two reasons: the first one is that yourself, you don’t even realise what the hell would happened to you? For example, before leaving my family two years ago I threw away all my stuff, like the iPhone, tablet, computer, books and clothes… Later on, I could not understand why it had happened. Living under the stars in the mountains I felt eyes on me. Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa are very small, people in the towns know each other well. I could ever imagine what they would think about the strange woman with short hair…

Still, at that moment the decision to leave my family behind, and to be homeless seemed very logical to me. It’s a sign of a “mental break.” Suddenly something changes, and you feel like the common situation seems strange. Talking about is like a confession to everybody else that you able to loose control over your mind, and behave like a stranger to yourself. How could you explain why? I’m writing about to show other people that being ashamed about the whole thing is not the only choice. Most of the people would hide what was happening from the others, but it would sentence you to spend your life with a sense of embarrassment.

Yes, it is difficult to talk about mental illness in public, and there is another reason. We do long to be liked by the others. Most of us, we are approval seekers. We would spend a lot of time and effort to create an image that we think people would find appealing. Still, there is another need: of being more authentic. In the end of the day, behind almost all the “perfect images” that we are showing in public there is something hidden, like emotional trauma or childhood scars. I’m talking about my problems hoping that I won’t be rejected, and the others would understand…

To oznaka załamania nerwowego.

Stigma

I’m out of my mind but I’m not like the others” – The leader singer of the band Maneskin is singing. To him, it’s just the words, but for me it’s a reality. Almost two years ago I was living along with my family on the Colajanni 13 street in Bari, a city by the sea. My husband was renting the apartment: there was not much of the furniture, but it had a lot of space. I liked it, from our balcony I could see the sea: only half an hour of the walk. The 14th of June (my mother’s birthday) I decided to make a very dramatic gesture: I left my home, my husband and children… Everything. Leaving it behind, I took with me some money, clothes and books.

For one month I was living under the stars at Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, two beautiful towns in the mountains. My adventure ended with a long fasting. For two weeks I was living without any food, from which one week without even water. The reason is that at the age of 44 I fell with mental disorder. Apparently it takes courage to reveal the fact in public. Mental illness seems to be something that cannot be discussed. Generally people are very uncomfortable with it, and tend to hide the whole thing from the others. I’ve also tried to do it for a while, only to discover that it would only increase the sense of shame and embarrassment. Now I’m deciding to write about it, hoping that it could help to remove the stigma of mental illness.

“According to the World Health Organisation, 1 in 4 people will experience mental health problems at some point in their lives. That’s one-quarter of the world’s population.” - I read. We’re not ashamed when our bodies get sick, so why should we be ashamed when our minds aren’t in top form? We should be looking after our mental health in the same way we look after our physical health.” I agree with it. I reveal my mental illness in public because shame only makes things worse… The more we’re talking about something, the more all right it becomes.

To jedna czwarta całej populacji!” - czytam.

23.Io posso amare

As I wrote before, I’m dealing with shame, in the last weeks the emotion transformed into a state of being. It’s a sign that the shame turns into an identity and becomes toxic. It’s a painful emotion, and drains the energy. “To heal toxic shame you need to come out of hiding” – I read. “We cannot change out ‘internalized’ shame until we ‘externalize’ it.” That’s what I’m doing, last week I went to see my in-lows and Antonietta, I also called my friends. Anna revealed me a funny story.

She was just back from the church, after a Holy Mass she liked a lot. She was still living in the atmosphere of solemnity, but only she crossed the threshold of her apartment, she felt a very bad smell… It occurred that a malfunction in the toilet just triggered sort of catastrophe. There was a lot of poo all over the floor… The first thought of my friend Anna was: “Damn it!” Such a misfortune brings the mood down! But then, she decided not to be angry, and sing the church music: “Bless You Lord.”

We are deciding that there are two things, the bad and the good one. Our mind is endowing negative qualities, we are judging all the time. Checking the forecast we’re deciding first, that the cold is depressing. Good soldier Svejk is happy: instead of judging he’s praising the jail and mental institute, where he’s fed with bread and milk… The thought of evil is causing fear, but reality you don’t judge gives reason for being happy. I’m dealing with toxic shame not because the others are nasty. I keep judging myself, and find guilty… In that way, “io non posso amare me stessa.”

To bolesna emocja, odbiera energię. To właśnie chcę zrobić, koniec z ukrywaniem. Pojechałam odwiedzić teściów i Antoniettę, zadzwoniłam też do znajomych.

W ten sposób “io non posso amare me stessa.”

22.Io posso amare

It is three o’clock and since the morning, I have eaten: cereals and coffee, chocolate and coconut-filled candy bar, a lot of bananas, lemon with honey, pasta for lunch, sandwiches, cucumber, cocoa biscuits… “Binge eating makes sense if you have the feeling of endless void” – I read. “Eating can be a symbolic way of filling that void.” I agree with it, that’s why it’s so difficult to stop binge eating every 15 minutes or so! Sometimes eating can save a life, like that bloody Sunday a couple of weeks ago. At some point I felt really down… But in the very moment I remember that “zio Paolo” (uncle Paolo) gave to my husband two jars of home made jam.

I opened one of them: it tasted lovely! Needles to say that finished it on my own, along with crispy bun. After that, I felt much better somehow… “There is some pleasure in eating which can act as a temporary distraction from the emotional pain” – I read. “The needs that are unmeet of those who are living with depression can be a wide range of possibilities from feeling lonely hopeless purposeless and worthless.”

That’s how I feel. Recently I am upset for no reason… Actually there is a reason. I’m struggling with difficult emotions: on the one hand, eating is giving some comfort, on the other hand – I feel guilty about what I’ve eaten. Yes, I feel down recently but sometimes a small thing like “zio Paolo” jam can make a difference. It’s more than a food: every time when I see the second jar in the fridge, I remember that there is someone who likes you a bit… A reason that despite everything, “posso amare me stessa.”

Dobry powód, pomimo wszystko “posso amare me stessa.”
